After World War I, pneumonia, the major killer of Western man, had been cured by antibiotics making germ theory and the model of infection ”big scientific news”. After the discovery of antibiotics, science began to equate health with the model of germ theory; kill the germs that make people sick and people will get well. Health authorities took this a bit too far and told women because breasts are dirty breastfeeding was unsanitary and unsterile. Unfortunately this new idea resulted in the dramatic decline of breastfeeding in America between the1940s and 1970s. By the end of the 70s, 95% of all babies were exclusively bottle fed from day one. Unfortunately those years showed the greatest increase in breast cancer too. According to the American Cancer Society 2001 Surveillance Research, every baby you have lowers your risk of breast cancer by 7%. For every year you have that baby before the age of 28 lowers it by another 3%. Every twelve months of your life that you breast feed lowers your risk by 4.3%. The longer you breast feed without supplementation the lower your risk of cancer. As for your new born, the evidence that breast feeding protects children from lymphoma has been around for years. An amazing study done in 1999 at the Institute for Laboratory Medicine at Lund University in Sweden found that the protein in breast milk in vitro killed every kind of cancer they tried it on. By not having babies and not breastfeeding there is a loss of cancer fighting immunity for both mother and baby.
