So what did the 3 wise men know and what was the significance of their gifts…frankincense, myrrh and gold, which some believe may have been turmeric? Used for thousands of years, these potent oils and herbs have incredible healing abilities. Whether you’re religious or not, someone knew the significance of these oils and herbs, enough to include them in one of the most famous books in history, the bible. With the introduction of modern medicine, their healing abilities got lost along the way. But with the era of the internet, the healing abilities of these oils are once again being rediscovered and considered a treatment option for many ailments. Because essential oils are fairly new to me, I can hardly do the subject justice. I am fascinated however by the success stories from the many people who have used them.
While there are many oils that can be safely used for babies and children, it’s always important to consult a trained physician when using any kind of treatment. Aromatherapy experts Robert Tisserand and Shirly Price are a great first step and resource when researching the benefits of essential oils.
Shirley Price’s book, Aromatherapy for Babies and Children, mentions 19 oils that are safe for children. These oils are:
- Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)*
- Cedarwood (Cedrus atlantica)**
- Chamomile, Roman (Chamaemelum nobile)
- Cypress (Cupressus sempervirens)
- Frankincense (Boswellia carteri)
- Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens)
- Ginger (Zingiber officinale)
- Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia)
- Lemon (Citrus limon)*
- Mandarin (Citrus reticulata)*
- Marjoram (Origanum majorana)
- Melaleuca-Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia)
- Orange (Citrus aurantium)*
- Rose Otto (Rosa damascena)
- Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)**
- Rosewood (Aniba rosaeodora)
- Sandalwood (Santalum album)
- Thyme (Thumus vulgaris CT linalol)
- Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata)
*These oils are photosensative; always dilute. To prevent a rash or pigmentation of the skin, do not use citrus oils when exposed to direct sunlight.
**These oils should never be used undiluted on babies and children.
Caution: Do not use synthetic or adulterated oils. Do not use oils with different botanical names until the safety data has been thoroughly reviewed.
Unlike the era of the 3 wise men, we are fortunate enough to have the information available at our fingertips. We just need to be wise enough to use it! 😉
Written by Christine Barlow, Inventor of 5 Phases Eco-Friendly Baby Bottle System
Mom Christine Barlow is the inventor of 5 Phases eco-friendly and non-toxic baby bottles, the safest and healthiest way to bottle feed your baby. Her inspiration in creating an alternative to traditional feeding bottles came after the birth of her 1lb 7oz micro-preemie baby. Having a compromised child, she became aware how environmental factors were affecting our children. With all the concerns of plastics and infants being the most vulnerable, she felt there was a need for more options for parents who wanted to use glass. She knew she had to act – and the 5 Phases Hybrid Glass Baby Bottles were born.
5 Phases is dedicated to helping families achieve a healthier and organic lifestyle. Starting with baby, they develop products keeping both the environment and health of your family in mind. And when it comes to your baby nothing else will do – Christine knows, she’s a mom too!
