Halloween is a time of imagination, creativity and having spooky fun, however it’s not the ghosts and goblins we need to fear. If you’re not careful you might be buying products for your little ones costume that might contain some pretty scary stuff.
Face painting can give any child’s costume that perfect final touch, but between misleading labels and the lack of regulation in the cosmetic industry you may unknowingly be spreading harmful ingredients on your child’s skin. A majority of Halloween face paints contain ingredients that may cause a range of health issues from skin irritation to cancer from chemicals like phthalates, parabens, dioxins, formaldehyde and other petroleum derived ingredients. Additionally heavy metals like lead, nickel cobalt and chromium have been found in face paints
One might ask how these chemicals can even be allowed in products we use on children. Because of legal loopholes, companies in the US can put nearly any ingredient they want into personal care products. It’s hard to believe but there is no safety testing required. However the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics is trying to put an end to the loopholes by advocating the passage of the Safe Cosmetic Act which would require testing and full disclosure of all ingredients in cosmetics.
So if you are interested in face paint that won’t make your skin crawl, here are a few suggestions of companies with face paints that aren’t quite so scary.
