Has your baby just recently transitioned to solids but are not yet into finger foods? By being creative and combining the same foods their older siblings and the adults are eating they too can take part in the traditional holiday feast of Thanksgiving. If you haven’t attempted to make your own baby food you may be surprised how easy it is. There are also benefits to getting baby used to the same foods the rest of the family is eating as well. Getting them eating the family dinner flavors early on could make for an easier transition for the picky eaters when it comes to the next eating stage. But best of all, by making your own baby food you’ll know exactly what you are feeding your baby. So for this Thanksgiving, forget the jars and try making your own. Your baby will like it and you will feel good about it too.
Babies Thanksgiving Feast
1 cup of organic free range Turkey – cooked cubed
Homemade chicken stock/or water
¼ cup peeled cooked organic carrots
¼ cup peeled cooked organic winter squash
1/2 cup peeled cooked organic potatoes
1/2 cup peeled cooked organic sweet potatoes
1 small handful of fresh or frozen organic cranberries – Cranberries can cause a tummy ache for some babies.
Veggies should be cooked to where they are easily pierced with a fork.
Put the turkey pieces into a food processor, blend adding the stock/water a little at a time. Add the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth. Stock or water can be added if the puree needs to be thinner and remember babies don’t need the added salt, sugar and fats so pull your babies portions out before the final salting and seasonings.
Pumpkin Pie- 6mos+
Reserve a couple of tablespoons of unsweetened pumpkin puree from your pumpkin pie. Mix with a little prepared oatmeal and a dash of cinnamon.
You can process baby foods in a blender or food processor; however to completely puree foods, food mills removes the skins and stings and are preferred in baby food preparation for first time solid food eaters. Since glass is best for storing any food, our 5 Phases glass inserts make a perfect storage container!
So, pull up the high chair and cherish this time as your baby partakes in the traditional holiday feast of Thanksgiving.
Always check with your pediatrician when introducing new foods to verify the food you are feeding them is age appropriate.
