Life is a beautiful thing and as we sit down to our Thanksgiving dinner, we really need to reflect on how precious life truly is. When we start our family, life as we know it changes. Things that were important before seem insignificant. As a new parent, an instinct seems to take over as this overwhelming desire embeds our hearts to keeping our family safe. Who would have ever known, the not so obvious, could be the most important thing in keeping our children safe; “the very food we put on our table”. With cancer being the number one disease killer amongst children in the US, and asthma, diabetes and autism in epidemic proportions one must ask oneself; “what has changed”? For the first time in years researchers are saying our children may not live as long as we do. But wouldn’t research tell us if our foods were causing harm? Unfortunately, the research from even our hospitals and universities are often funded by the very companies who produce the chemicals being studied. It seems pretty clear; it doesn’t take much to see that our generation is getting sicker. So how is it that our food is seemingly being degraded? According to Maria Rodale author of Organic Manifesto about 930 million acres of chemical farms are in production here in the US which include both genetically modified organism and non GMO crops. Farmers are strongly encouraged and pressured into using GMO seeds. Some of these seeds are modified with the help of bacterium like Escherichia coli or salmonella in order to resist the herbicide they use to keep their fields free of weeds. These bacteria act as a kind of barrier for the DNA being transferred which then in turn create antibiotics in the process. The cost of course is in the billions yet the government requires no health and safety testing or labeling. Once a farmer commits to the chemical system over organic he becomes married to the system. The soil becomes weak and degraded from being over treated with chemicals. Overtime, the soil becomes infertile which then requires more synthetic fertilizer to help the crops grow. It’s a vicious cycle. Typically these chemicals are made and sold by the same companies who sell the GMO seeds. These companies make a healthy profit as the farmer often struggles to pay his bills. By choosing good wholesome organic food to put on your table not only protects your family but the farmers, their workers and wildlife too! As a consumer everything you choose does make a difference. The choices you make every day are the path to change. As we sit down to our Thanksgiving dinner let us remember all the things we are thankful for. Wouldn’t it be nice to sit down to a dinner with food the way nature intended it to be?
